Vaccinations

Vaccinations are an important part of pet preventative healthcare. At Clayburn Pet Hospital we believe in judicial vaccinating, but not over-vaccinating. We discuss diseases that your pet may be at risk for depending on lifestyle, and then recommend vaccinations based on risk. Protecting your pet from contagious or life-threatening diseases gives you the safety and peace of mind in the long run, and helps mitigate risk to your pet’s health.

Remember that vaccinations help reduce the severity of disease, but many do not prevent disease entirely. Always take care to avoid contact with known infectious pets. Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect a disease or infection has been contracted.

Dogs

For our canine friends, we protect against:

[Core Vaccines]

Diseases fully preventable through administered vaccines.

DAPP is our combination core vaccine. The acronym is deciphered as follows:

Distemper Virus (D)

A viral disease that affects the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts and often the nervous system, and is often fatal.
* 3 boosters are recommended every 3-4 weeks between the age of 8 and 20 weeks of age, then one year after the initial dose and every 3 years thereafter.

Adenovirus/Hepatitis (A/H/A2)

Adenovirus type 1 causes canine hepatitis, a viral disease that affects the liver and other organ systems causing serious illness which is sometimes fatal and is highly infectious. Adenovirus type 2 is one of the pathogens that causes respiratory illness, which used to be known as “kennel cough” in dogs. A vaccination against adenovirus type 2 protects against both adenovirus types 1 and 2.
* 3 boosters are recommended every 3-4 weeks between the age of 8 and 20 weeks of age, then one year after the initial dose and every 3 years thereafter.

Parvovirus (P)

Parvovirus in canines is an infectious viral DNA disease most common in young/newborns that affects the body’s rapidly dividing cells. This damages the intestinal tract, bone marrow, and even heart muscle cells of young puppies, causing severe vomiting and diarrhea.
* 3 boosters are recommended every 3-4 weeks between the age of 8 and 20 weeks of age, then one year after the initial dose and every 3 years thereafter.

Parainfluenza (P)

A highly contagious viral disease affecting the respiratory system, commonly known to cause kennel cough, and affects dogs of all ages.
* 3 boosters are recommended every 3-4 weeks between the age of 8 and 20 weeks of age, then one year after the initial dose and every 3 years thereafter.

Rabies

A fatal viral disease that affects the central nervous system, causing severe neurological damage. Present in saliva of an infected animal, it is transmitted through bites, open wounds, or eyes/nose/mouth. Once contracted,  Rabies is almost always fatal.
* 2 initial boosters are recommended, the first between 16 and 20 weeks of age and the second one year later followed by boosters every 3 years

[Non-core Vaccines]

Vaccines that reduce severity and risk of contracting disease, but do not fully prevent.

Bordetella (intranasal)

A bacterial infection that can cause or contribute to kennel cough.
* Recommended at the time of second vaccine booster, which is usually given at 12 weeks of age, then annually.

Adenovirus (intranasal)

* Recommended at the time of second vaccine booster, which is usually given at 12 weeks of age.

Parainfluenza (intranasal)

* Recommended at the time of second vaccine booster, which is usually given at 12 weeks of age, then annually.

Leptospirosis (administered twice)
A bacterial disease that affects several internal systems like the kidneys and liver.
* Recommended at time of second and third vaccine boosters, usually given at 12 and 16 weeks of age, then annually.

Lyme

Lyme disease is a bacterial disease spread by ticks that can cause problems such as arthritis or kidney disease. Lyme is a risk only in certain geographical locations, so check with the vet whether this vaccine is necessary for your dog.
* Recommended at 12 and 16 weeks of age, then annually.

Canine Influenza (H3N8 or H3N2)

A highly contagious canine influenza virus (CIV) that causes flu-like respiratory symptoms like coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, fever, lethargy, and in severe cases, pneumonia.
* Recommended at 12 and 16 weeks of age, then annually.

Cats

For our feline friends, we protect against:

[Core Vaccines]
Diseases fully preventable through administered vaccines.

FRVCP

FRVCP stands for Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calcivirus, and Panleukopenia. Rhinotracheitis and Calcivirus are common feline viruses that are known to cause upper respiratory infections. Panleukopenia (feline distemper) is a highly contagious and often fatal disease that attacks dividing cells, where the intestines, bone marrow, and in certain cases, developing fetus are most highly affected.
* Recommended at 6 to 8 weeks, every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks of age, then every 3 years.

Rabies

A fatal viral disease that affects the central nervous system, causing severe neurological damage. Present in saliva of an infected animal, it is transmitted through bites, open wounds, or eyes/nose/mouth. Once contracted, almost always fatal.
* Recommended between 16 and 20 weeks of age, then every 3 years after initial dose.

[Non-core Vaccines]
Vaccine helps lower risk of contracting and spreading of disease, but does not provide complete prevention.

FeLV

FeLV stands for feline leukemia virus, one of the most common infectious diseases in cats. It can cause a variety of health issues including cancer and immune system disorders. It is considered a core vaccine for young kittens/newborns, and a non-core vaccine in adult cats.
* Recommended at 6 to 8 weeks, every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks of age, then annually.

Parasite Prevention

Certain lifestyles and climates pose higher risks of parasites for pets. It is less expensive and less harmful to your pet to prevent parasites rather than to treat them once they are established.

Fleas

Fleas are very small. Usually confused with ticks, adult fleas are only about 1/8th of an inch long. They are a dark reddish-brown color and can move and jump with speed. They are often found and contracted in wild grassy or sandy areas that can hop onto your dog as they go past, and also very easy to be contracted from other dogs. They are much more common in the summer.

Prevention consists of either oral or topical medication that is recommended to be administered once a month.

Ticks

Ticks are blood-sucking parasites that latch onto animal’s fur coats, and transmit diseases. They are present in many wild areas with high vegetation, where they are extremely adept to attaching to their hosts fur coat of fur as they brush past. They become extremely more common in the summer.

Prevention consists of either oral or topical medication that is recommended to be administered once a month.

Heartworms

Heartworms is a serious and potentially fatal disease in dogs caused by a parasitic roundworm that is often spread by mosquito bites that infects the heart, lungs and blood. Heartworm causes severe lung, heart, and organ damage.

Prevention consists of an oral tablet that is recommended to be administered once a month.

Intestinal Parasites

Intestinal Parasites such as Roundworms, Hookworms, Whipworms, Tapeworms, and Giardia are all organisms that live in the digestive tract and cause diseaseintestinal parasites in dogs. They can be contracted by eating raw uncooked meat from an infected animal or aquatic animal, or contact with contaminated water, soil, and feces. They live in different sections of the digestive tract. Symptoms of these types of parasites are malnutrition, diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, anemia, and many more.

Prevention is with an oral medication recommended to be administered once a month.

Microchipping

One sometimes overlooked aspect of preventative health is the act of microchipping a pet. Accidents and incidents happen, and prevention from lost or stolen animals is an important peace of mind for pet owners whose animals like to explore, escape, or have the potential to get a little too curious and stray a little too far from home.

Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice, implanted just under the skin, usually right between the shoulder blades. This is a relatively harmless procedure, done with a large-bore needle and doesn’t require anesthesia. Each microchip contains an identification number, and your information must be registered with your car code number so that you may be contacted if your pet is found.

If a pet is found, appropriate animal care facilities (shelters, hospitals, etc.) will scan the pet with a microchip reader that is simply waved over the skin. Once a microchip is found, they lookup the registered owner, and the lost pet is reported. The pet owner is notified immediately and given the contact information about where to pick up their pet.
